CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW The banks in todayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s world are trying to attract students to open their accounts at their banks. To them a student is not a student: a student is an individual who would have a career some day and this particular individual would be a loyal customer, would pay back his or her overdraft (sometimes with charges), need a loan or a mortgage and so on. CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY 3.1 Sample The present study was an investigation into student banking arrangements at four major banks- HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest- in the Newcastle area, and recommendations as to which provided the best services to international students. A sample of 100 subjects, including both males and females, ranging from the ages of 18 to 28 years, was drawn from different areas in Newcastle, United Kingdom. All the subjects were international students belonging to Newcastle university dormitories, Northumbria dormitories and Newcastle college campus in Newcastle. Another sample of 40 subjects, both males and females, was drawn from bank personnel of HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest. 10 employees from each bank were drawn as a sample. Further information from both international students and bank personnel was gathered regarding age, gender, education, accommodation, etc. 3.2 Sampling Strategy The sampling strategy employed in the research was Stratified Random Sampling. Stratified Random Sampling also referred as proportional  or  quota  random sampling, is separating the population into uniform subgroups and then drawing a simple random sample from each subgroup (Trochim, 2006). The reason for employing Stratified Random Sampling was that it enabled the researcher to draw a sample of international students from the total population and then draw a random sample among the international students to administer the questionnaire. Same was the case with the questionnaire from the banking personnel. For the present study, both primary and secondary researches were carried out. The use of both primary and secondary researches enabled the researcher to not only gather facts and figures about the products and services the different banks offered but it allowed analysis of the arrangements that the banks offered to international students through these products and services. 3.3 Primary Research 3.3.1 Questionnaire for Students A questionnaire was distributed among international students of Newcastle to find out which of the bank accounts was used most by the students. The questionnaire also had questions concerned with why the students chose a certain bank among HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest and what features of that bank attracted them the most. There were questions designed to investigate the geographic locations and ease of access to these banks within the region designated to students and their life styles. The questionnaire was divided into three sections. The first section dealt with gathering the information regarding the student respondent. This section included questions on age, gender, and educational level, how the student was funding his/her education, his/her tuition fee, maintenance cost, etc. The second section of the questionnaire was designed to gain an insight in the respondentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s history of banking. This section included questions on the number of accounts the student held previously and the type of account he/she held. The next section that is the last section was regarding the respondentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s experience of banking in Newcastle with the four banks; HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest. The questions in this section also dealt with the importance of different offered services to the respondent, factors that were involved in the studentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s choosing a certain bank. Furthermore, questions on comparison of the four banks in Newcastle that is, HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest on the difference of the services and the type of accounts the respondent held at these banks were also included. 3.3.2 Questionnaire for Bank Personnel Another questionnaire was designed to gather data from the bank personnel of HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest. These questions were related to how important potential student customers were to their organization. Furthermore, the questions also investigated the management and marketing strategies these banks used. This questionnaire was also divided into three sections. The first section of the questionnaire was designed to provide a profile of the bank employee who responded to the survey. Questions on age, gender, the bank they were currently working for and their designation at the bank were included. The next section was regarding the importance of students as customers to these banks. In this section, the banking personnel were asked questions regarding whether it was important to have students as their customers, the type of accounts held by the students, why the students chose their bank over their competitors and the significance of different t ypes of services offered at their banks. The third section was related to the marketing strategies, that is, the 4Ps that the banks used to attract students. This section included questions on the product, price, promotion and place of the products and services offered to the international students. 3.3.3 Consent Letter All the participants in the study were given a consent letter, which gave them the right to withdraw any information at any stage of the research. Also the authority and confidentiality of the people was confirmed 3.3.4 Cover Letter A cover letter was attached to both the questionnaires which explained the aims and objectives of the research to the respondents. It gave information about the time that the questionnaire would take to complete. Furthermore, it explained the privacy and the confidentiality of the information gathered. . 3.4 Secondary Research Secondary research was also employed in the present study. The purpose for this was to gather data regarding each bank from internet, books, articles and international account handbooks. The use of secondary research enabled the researcher to gather information regarding the various products and services offered to international students by these banks. Furthermore, it also enhanced the level of objectivity involved in the research as the data was gathered from other sources. 3.5 Research Design A comparative research design was employed in the study. A comparative research design evaluates two or more groups on one variable (McMillan 1991). This was employed because the research is an investigation in to student banking arrangements at four major banks in the Newcastle area, and recommendations as to which provide the best services to international students; (HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest). Another sample of 40 subjects was drawn from bank personnel of HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest. A comparative research design was employed in the research which is aimed the comparison of two or more groups on one variable (McMillan 1991). Stratified random sampling was used. First of all written permission was taken from the heads of educational institutions and the banks. They were briefed about the research, its significance, time involved and the proce dure. Furthermore, the sample population was informed and consent forms were distributed. Also the authority and confidentiality of the people was confirmed. Individual testing was carried out. One time approach to the participants was used for data collection. The subjects were administered the questionnaires. The testing environment provided to the sample population was sufficiently quite to facilitate adequate concentration. The instructions were read aloud so that the sample population could easily comprehend the questionnaire. On average the administration took 15 minutes in individual testing situation. The study was under taken from February 2010 to March 2010. 3.7 Qualitative Analysis The qualitative analysis of the data included why students had opted for a certain bank, as well as some information of the facilities provided by each bank. Furthermore, it also included the types of the services students opted for at banks and what products and services of the banks attracted them the most. The qualitative analysis of the data gathered from the bank personnel included the analysis of importance of students as customers to the bank. This allowed the researcher to acquire a quantitative analysis of the data collected. CHAPTER 5 DISCUSSION In an increasingly competitive United Kingdom banking sector, banks cannot be far from understanding from the requirements, drives and purchase decisions of consumers. Similarly, banks are not unaware of the limitations that might be faced by the consumers desiring to purchase their products and services. One of the interesting findings of the study is that students extremely value their time and anticipate their banking transactions to be fulfilled as swiftly as possible. Therefore, the most significant method for financial transactions was considered as the ATMs and the debit/credit card. Moreover, the predominant factor in the studentsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ choice of the bank was convenience, that is, the proximity of an ATM from the college. Moreover, student offers and other facilities were also considered to be an important criterion for the bank selection among students. Furthermore, the results of the study clearly indicated that most of the students required bank accounts f or payment of fee or accommodation, thus, in Newcastle they mostly held student/current accounts which not only provided them with the basic facilities required for financial transactions but also offered them a number incentives like the Railway Card offered by NatWest. Even though all the four banks offered the basic facilities, but it was Lloyds TSB that most of the international students held accounts with. This was due to the fact that they offered a range of different student accounts to cater to the needs and wants of students belonging to diverse backgrounds. This fact laid a stamp on the rewarding of Lloyds Student Account the top 5 Star Rating by Defaqto for the excellent advantages it offered to the students (Student metrics: student banking and insurance in the UK 2007). The incentive of the Railway Card put NatWest in the second position with HSBC and Barclays following respectively. The management of the United Kingdom banks has acknowledged the significance of s tudents as customers by offering a range of student accounts. They have expanded their customersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ base by including international students as possible customers. By employing a global perspective and turning their banks into a global brand, banks are devising new and innovative management and marketing strategies to attract students to open accounts in their respective banks (Bank marketing international 2006). Banks have recognized that a potential student customer is a customer for life and as customers are the lifeblood of banks, therefore the customersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ views and demand should never be ignored. As the basic features in consumer groups vary to some extent, it is imperative for banks to aim market sections that are similar in regards to related financial service buying behavior (Harris 2000). The international studentsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ market in Newcastle is a rapidly growing segment as a result of the growing awareness of higher education in dev eloping countries. With the intention of being competitive in luring possible student customers, banks are keen to spend on a variety promotional programmes and incentives, with the plan of developing awareness for services being offered. Furthermore due to the fast-paced technological environment in todayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s world, banks are emphasizing more on providing facilities to the students that offer convenience and quick financial transactions. Therefore, the rapid growth of ATMs near educational institutions and debit/credit card facility for students amongst banks is a common phenomenon. Also, both internet and telephone banking are other tools employed by banks to make banking transactions more convenient and easier. While pricing their products and services, banks keep in their mind the financial position of the students and thus offer a number of incentives along with the basic facilities. The bank management must therefore carefully think over the transforming world s cenario when creating financial strategies. The needs and wants of international students must also be considered in the development of banks service marketing plans (Kotler 2002). CONCLUSION The aim of the present study was to evaluate the major banking institutes in Newcastle and distinguish the services and account types offered to international students. For the study, four banks were selected among which three were United Kingdom based and one was an international bank. These banks were: HSBC Lloydà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s TSB Barclays National Westminster (NatWest) The researcher compared the different services offered and the ease of accessibility of these banks to the international students with they region they resided and attended their respective colleges or universities. The most significant fact revealed by the present study was that the students were mostly interested in receiving quick and convenient banking transactions. There was no significant difference in the basic facilities provided by the four banks. But a little difference was found in the incentives offered by the four banks and these differences depended on the policies of the particul ar banks and the needs and wants of the student customers. The results of the study clearly provide the basis for suggesting that Lloyds TSB was the most popular among the students due to its different range of studentsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ accounts. The patterns that emerged from the study provided an insight into strategies that banks use and can make use of to attract potential student customers.

It is a futuristic film which predicted that in the near future, humans’ lives will revolve around Matrix, a simulated reality. Neo came to a realization that the world that he has inhabited in 1999 is just an illusion. It was made and developed by certain intelligent machines to keep the human population peaceful. Thus, it gave birth to the name Matrix. Morpheus and his team are lucky enough for they are free. Their duty is to remove other humans from their attachment to the Matrix and in return give them inhumane abilities. They believe that Neo is â€Å"the One† who will end the war because of his infinite control over the Matrix. To completely become a member of the group, Neo is trained to possess several self-defense disciplines which primarily include martial arts. Alongside with this, he’s also informed of the dangers that entail the Matrix life.   All the injuries that he will acquire in the Matrix will manifest in his physical body in the real world. As the time progressed, Neo gradually tagged along with the team’s operations. The group entered Matrix wherein Neo met the Oracle. She told Neo that he possessed a gift for being â€Å"the One† but that he is waiting for something. After this, the group was ambushed by Agents, the fast programs whose aim is to eradicate any threats to the simulation. Unfortunately, Morpheus is the only one who was captured by the Agents. All the members of Neo’s group died except him, Tank, Trinity and Morpheus. It turned out that they were betrayed by their own member, Cypher. A lot of things still happened but one of the most gripping scenes is when Neo is captured by the Agents and he was shot dead by one of them. Neo should’ve been dead if not for Trinity who kissed him. Long before that occurrence, Trinity was already warned that she would fall in love with â€Å"the One†. It’s hard for her to accept Neo’s sudden death so she kissed Neo. To her surprise, Neo’s heart starts beating again. The Agents tried to shoot him but Neo just raised his pal and stopped their bullets in the mid-air.   And finally, Neo saw the Matrix- an infinite number of streaming green lines. Hence, he became â€Å"The One†. The Matrix is indeed one of the most compelling examples that can illustrate some of the facets of the cultural anthropology. Some might think that The Matrix is just a great and dazzling action movie but if you’ll really scratch beneath the surface, you’ll discover that a lot of realities about humankind are hidden in the film.   Innumerable people have watched this movie, but only few really understood the superb analogy that covers the film. Cultural anthropology is indeed vast as it curtains a lot of cultures from different sides of the world. However, The Matrix was able to come up with a coherent comprehension of what is happening in the cultures right now. Cultures now including its people are living in an illusory world that’s full of deceits, slavedom, economic turmoil, fear, media stereotypes and material indulgence. What humankinds fail to realize is that a real Matrix also exists within their cultures. They are driven by the wrong things that they gradually forget to value the things that really matter. Because of their struggle to be wealthy and powerful, their task to nurture and enrich their culture is disregarded. The Matrix gives the image of an existence that’s full of superficiality and trivialities. The image shows that people do everything to block an upsetting reality by wallowing themselves with material pretensions. It is quite intoxicating for some cultures that are drenched in wealth while the other cultures are wallowing in misery. The Matrix can also be connected to cultural anthropological perspectives as it neatly depicts the demarcation that the cultures have right now. The film evidently showed the conflict that’s present between Neo’s side and the Agents. It showed that cultures, despite some of their similarities with other cultures will still remain to be poles apart. It is primarily because these cultures live up to diverse ideals and beliefs. The Matrix is undeniably a worth watching film because it’s not just an ordinary action movie full of explosions, special effects, and adrenalins.   It is a movie that truly makes sense as it will help the people to reflect and realize what’s really going on. The film might also show them how to modify their distorted principles about their cultures. A film like this is quite moving because it offers the possible things that might happen to humankind in the future if the continuous clashing of culturally-acclaimed principles will continue. Although you have to really ponder on the film to see its relation with cultural anthropology, it’s still worth-watching because of its profound illustration. The entire hidden implications of the film are completely and utterly true. The Matrix is a ground-breaking film as it changed how action and sci-fi movies are supposed to be made. It demonstrated its own unique sense as it made people change how they look at their cultures. There are lots of symbolisms that were used in the film. Nevertheless, the spirit of humankind still managed to shine in its own way. Neo’s journey toward understanding his real fate teaches a lot of lesson regarding culture. Many of these things that we discovered or invented we thought would never be possible in earths life time. But they exists now, today, they are used by almost every human being and there are many more incredible and unmanageable things to come and aid us in every day life. One of the most interesting things to me would fall under exploration and inventing. You are about to venture in to the history of space and learn how man and mans objects have gotten there. The exploration in space dates back over 40 years ago, January, 31 of 1958 to be exact. On this date Explorer 1, which was the first U.S. satellite to be fired in space and its unknown, to orbit earth. It lifted off from Cape Canaveral using a modified Jupiter-C rocket called ABMA-JPL. It carried a scientific experiment of James A. Van Allen, and discovered the Earths radiation belt. Along with defeat and triumph also come disappointment and failure. In March 5 of 1958 Explorer 2 was launched by another Jupiter-C rocket and failed to reach orbit. October 1, 1958 NASA was founded, taking over existing National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics and only ten days later U.S. IGY space probe was launched to a incredible height of 70,700 miles. On March 3 of 1959 Pioneer 4, an U.S.-IGY space probe is launched by a Juno II rocket, and achieves an earth-moon trajectory, passing within 37,000 miles of the moon. It then fell into a solar orbit, becoming the first U.S. sun orbiter. About a year later Tiros 1 was fired into earths orbit and became the first successful weather satellite for the United States. Then on August 18 of the same year, 1960, Discoverer XIV was launched and became the first U.S. camera-equipped Corona spy satellite. On July 14, 1965, They U. S. Mariner 4 returned the first close-range images of Mars. The above paragraph explains some of the earliest satellites, spy satellites, and probes that were sent into space to explore the unknown and the ;Impossible;. May 5 of 1961 Mercury Freedom 7 carried Alan B. Shepard, Jr., who was the first U. S. astronaut in space, in a suborbital flight. This United States first manned space flight project was successfully accomplished in a 4 2/3 year period of dynamic activity. During this time they saw more than 2,000,000 people from many major government agencies and much of the aerospace industry and combined their skills, initiative, and experience into a national effort. Also during this 4 and 2/3 period six other manned space flights were accomplished as part of a 25-flight program. These manned space flights were accomplished with complete pilot safety and without change to the basic Mercury concepts. It was shown that man can function ably as a pilot-engineer-experimenter without undesirable reactions or deteriorations of normal body functions for periods up to 34 hours of weightless flight. And so we continue or fight through this History of Space Exploration Essay. February 20 of 1962 Mercury Friendship 7 lifts off with John H. Glenn, Jr., who was the first American in orbit, and orbits the Earth three times. In July 31, 1964 U. S. Ranger 7 relayed the first close range photographs of the moon. Probably more spectacular than man orbiting earth would be a space walk. The united state accomplished this in 1965 on Jun 3rd. Edward White II made the first U.S. space walk from space vehicle Gemini 4. The duration of the space walk was 22 minutes, which was the longest up to this date. December 4 of 1965 was a great day. Gemini 7 was launched carrying Frank Borman and James A. Lovell, Jr., which made 206 orbits around Earth and proving a trip to the moon possible. That the Beatles acclerated the change in society. December 21, 1968 Apollo 8 and its four crew members were the first Apollo team to make orbit around the moon, they actually made ten orbits around the moon. July 20, 1969 only 30 years ago Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, Jr. make the first manned soft landing on the moon. Not only this they were the first moonwalk and this trip was made possible because of Apollo 11 mission. Miss Crossman gives the white umbrella to her. She tells Miss Crossman that she wishes that she would have been her mother. The narrator begins to feel guilty, and that the Umbrella shows her disobedience towards her mother. After their mom finally shows up, she hides the umbrella underneath her clothing so that her mother does not see. They get into a car wreck on the way home. She sees that her mom’s eyes are closed. She begins to think her mother may have died. She decides to scream. Then she sees that her mom just closed her eyes because things have frustrated her. When her mother gets out the car to talk to the other people in the accident, she throws the umbrella down the sewer. This shows that you should never show ungratefulness for what you have. It does not matter about what you need to fit in with the people around you. It only matters what you need to live well. The white Umbrella, an informal story, it gives a life lesson. The noteworthy augmentation of the industry is attributed to many factors such as development of easy modes of transportation, changing demands of the people to visit various destination places, increasing need for exploring adventurous and artistic places worldwide and creation of tourist destinations in numerous countries for making the tourism industry an integral part of their economies (Bender, Gidlow Fisher, 2013; Wang, 1999). Since the tourism industry has gained huge importance, it has become a major area of study of the leading scholarly researchers. These specialists are doing extensive studies on the industry, the factors impacting its performance and the impact of tourist role on the destination images created by the tourism authorities in each country (Lim, 2007; Prentice, 2004). In order to study various aspects of the tourism industry, one school of thought is focussing on the socio-demographic characteristics and needs related to the specific styles of vacations or tourist roles (Cohen, 1974; Kim, 2009; McCabe, 2005). Hence, there is an enormous collection of work on the tourism industry, tourist role and the challenges faced by the players of the industry. Contribution of researchers in tourist studies In order to study the tourist role in the tourism industry, the researchers have utilised the anthropology study to generate an extensive body of theory that can provide assistance in defining and delimiting the object of study i.e. tourist. The classical theorists such as Cohen (1979), Horne (1992), Kadt (2001), Pearce (1982) and Smith (1978), cited by Heimtun (2007), have ascertained the relationship that exists between guests and hosts which means that they are created by developing a series of dichotomies such as locals/foreigners, stability/transience, production/consumption and work/leisure. Although these dichotomies do exist in the sector but it is important to conceptualize the role of tourist that has been mainly treated by the researchers in a negative way (Caru Cova, 2003; Frankin, 2003); the primary purpose is to make some beneficial contributions can be made in the field of research. The foremost aim of the studies related to tourists is not to defend them and close the eyes towards the negative aspects of the tourism but it should also highlight the positive aspects of the tourism and address the challenges that are encountered by the tourists during their visits in the destination places (Selstad, 2012). Various roles of tourist as depicted by researchers For decades, the tourists have been portrayed as the second-class citizens (Burner, 2001); this feeling of being considered as a dumb or unimportant person has been impacting the treatment of tourists worldwide. According to Jack and Phipps (2005), the local residents at destination places used to believe that tourists activities are lazy, dumb and fatuous. However, these conventional views about tourist behaviours have been challenged and many researchers have successfully revamped the tourist roles in the destination places and the shift has been made on studying the tourist experience (Dann, 2000). Uriely (2005) gave a review on the conceptual development of an excellent tourist experience that has received huge appreciation by the concerned authorities in the tourism industry. The researcher identified four developmental phases of the tourist roles: The tourism should be viewed as a separate activity from everyday life routine. There is a shift from the portrayal of tourists as homogenous people as a general form to multiplication of the depictions that are captured while tourism experience. A shift in focus for the objects displayed by the industry towards the negotiation of meanings in subjective way for determining the level of experience. A significant move from the decisive and contradictory academic information flow such as experience as moments of truths to harmonizing and virtual interpretations. The main problem in theories about the experience of tourist was that they lack focus on the term tourist role. Hence, the modern theorists started studying the tourist attitudes and behaviours that were depicted by their experiences in the destination places along with the stereotypes that were created among the tourist groups belonging to similar ethnic groups, religion, race, culture and etc. (Iverson, 2010). Stereotyping and prejudiced views of tourist role Since many researchers classified the tourist roles on the basis of their analysis, they created certain stereotypes about the tourist roles so that the tourist studies can be flourished. For instance, Cohen (1979) classified the tourist roles into four categories i.e. the explorer, the individual mass tourist, the drifter and the organised mass tourist. Jafari (2003) emphasised that the better classification of tourist roles can be stereotyped by adding behavioural characteristics such as takes photos, visits well-known places, pleasantly purchases souvenirs, tries local food, stays for some in one location and explores numerous destinations privately. From the studies of contemporary researchers, it is evident that they defined the role of tourists in accordance to their purpose of tourism; when there was increased focus on the tourism, there was less emphasis on treating tourist an individual. Cohen (1979) classified tourists into four broad groups such as recreational type, experimental type, existential type and experiential type. In each mode of tourism, the tourist wants to have some time off from everyday routine so that the energy can be revitalised and explore the culture and aesthetic offerings of the other countries that have distinctive norms, values and societies (Chok, Mcbeth Warren, 2007). The postmodern theorists have emphasised that the tourist roles have to be studied from the negotiated and subjective characteristics rather than rigid and reductionist perspectives that were done by contemporary researchers; their entire focus is on the tourist roles, meanings, attitudes and experiences. The recent terminology coined by Jacobsen and Munar (2012) is anti-tourist attitude which shows that the tourists want to be viewed in the role of tourist but want to keep a power distance when in this role. According to these researchers, the conception of anti-tourist role seems to challenge the tourists sense of individuality and identity; the role distance becomes of utmost importance to them as they want to maintain a feeling that each individual has different experience that can be entirely distinctive from all other players and occupants of the role (Litvin, Goldsmith Pam, 2008). It is believed that each tourist will have different sense of feelings in varying situations as each one of them has distinctive values, beliefs, preferences, attitudes and behaviours (Yang Wall, 2009). Most of the researchers have challenged the concept of stereotyping the tourist role on the basis of cultural differences or nationality because sometimes they often lead to misconceptions about tourist groups. For instance, it is believed that Japanese people cannot speak English and the tourist guide has to provide them assistance when communicating among the local residents; it is untrue in many situations as there are many Japanese people who can easily communicate in English. Likewise, there is a belief that Asian people like to eat their food items and dont prefer to try out the local food items of the destination place; it is a myth as well because there are many people who are looking forward to try out the new food items of the destination place (Selstad, 2012). Hence, the tourist roles should not be confined to the limited set of observations as every tourist has distinctive features and prefers to be treated in accordance to the individual personality possessed by the person. Rethinking the tourist role With the robust growth and development in the field of Internet, the tourist roles have changed to a great extent as the tourists have become information seekers and proficient in developing their own travelling packages. As they have easy access to the extensive range of details about various destination places, they ensure that they select the places in accordance to their own choices so that they have a marvellous time during their complete tourism (Selstad, 2012). The concerned authorities have to ensure that they even make proper use of the advertising mediums so that right message is communicated to the tourists. It would be considered to be more profitable to raise the price for a certain product if the effort that goes into it is equivalent to its pricing. Even though the percentage of customers may go down, the remaining percentage will generate profits on every sale. Before putting a price tag on its product, KFC looks at certain demographic factors such as age, gender, and household size. Although it has no age limit, KFC’s largest consumer group consists of young people regardless of their gender or gender roles. They have also found that their biggest consumers come from whole families rather than single households and thus they invented the ‘fa mily meals’ offer (.Kentucky Fried Chicken- KFC- Marketing Mix- Four Ps 2009). When pricing their products, KFC has looked at also economic factors. The income bracket determines which people the company will most likely target. In the beginning, their main focus was on the upper class but as years went by its focus shifted to include the lower and middle class families. Consumption behavior also determines the pricing of products according to which products the customers favor more to the least favored. Before determining the prices of their products, KFC first of all skims the market. They do this by pricing their products to suit the upper class before lowering their prices to accommodate the lower class category of people. Their prices also can be relatively compared to those of their competitors. KFC has dominated the chicken business and therefore their chicken products have a higher selling price than other fast food restaurants. However other products such as burgers and pizzas are sold at a lower price in order to attract customers. When pricing their products, they also consider the government tax and excise duty. Their prices are comparable to the products they give to the consumers as well as their market segment (Kentucky Fried Chicken- KFC- Marketing Mix- Four Ps 2009). Place is the fourth P. there are many ways in which a business enterprise can sell its products. First of all, the company may decide to sell its goods directly from its location or disperse agents on the ground to advertise and sell to potential customers. On the other hand, a company may utilize a variety of strategies such as telemarketing or through catalogues and mail orders. Either way, the company has to come up with a strategy that ensures the customer receives essential information that will equip them with knowledge to make a buying decision (Tracy 2004). The company must therefore ensure that the customer is able to access these services through the strategic loc ation of the business. KFC has utilized this strategy fully by coming up with a variety of services that they give to their customers. To begin with, they came up with the free home delivery strategy whose sole purpose was to deliver their products to homes and offices free of charge. They ensured that their customers didn’t have to travel long distances in order to access one of their outlets so they strategically put in place outlets around the city. KFC also didn’t leave out individuals that led a hectic lifestyle with little time to spare in preparing meals. It has catered well for such individuals by giving them a full meal in just minutes. Despite their high pricing, KFC has managed to control its pricing to suit all classes of people. KFC has cleverly placed its outlets in highly populated areas such as the urban areas which in turn bring in more profits for them. Schools, colleges, markets and cinemas are usually highly populated and therefore KFC has taken adv antage of this and situated their outlets in these areas. It utilizes the push strategy whereby it relies on its ability to sell its own products and services. Promotional efforts such as discounts can be used to help push their products and services through the distribution channels. This creates a sense of awareness, autonomy and it also sound attractive to the customer. Promotion is the fifth P in marketing. Businesses use this strategy to inform the customer of their products and services. This directly affects the sales of the businesses products if the promotion is done in the right way. Advertising slogans are the most common way of promoting products and services to customers. The way it is done will highly influence the customer’s interest. A slight adjustment to the advertisement slogan goes a long way to improve the company sales as the customers will always be talking about the products. It is of important try out various ways of advertising, promoting and selling of products. The same form of advertising may only work for a short period of time before the customers lose interest. Therefore to continue keeping the customer interested in the company’s products and services, the form of advertising and promotion has to be re-evaluated from time to time (Tracy 2004). KFC uses promotion as the main tool for informing their customers of various offers on their chicken products. To begin with, their logo of the smiling colonel is most likely an image that makes customers associate KFC with chicken. They use a company jingle, ‘finger licking good’, to create an impact to their customers. They show a normal person devouring a piece of chicken and this in turn makes the customer desire to have a piece of the KFC chicken pieces. This strategy has worked effectively in India where there is the largest market for chicken lovers. KFC uses advertisements to ensure that their customers are constantly reminded of how good their ‘fi nger licking’ chicken is. In order to enhance its overall image, the company sponsors various organizations such as the cricket team which spots the company logo on their uniforms when they go for their matches and tournaments. By using tools such as coupons, entertainment, premiums and exhibitions, KFC has managed to enhance its sales. The company has come up with various incentives that attract its customers to buy their various chicken products. For instance it offers free meals to the customers after the customer has spent a certain amount of money buying their products. A coupon is issued to the customer who in turn will use it to get their free meal. They also offer free meal vouchers using the print media whereby the customer cuts out the voucher and goes to one of their outlets to collect their meals. The sixth P is packaging. This is how the product being sold appeals to its customers. The packaging has to be attractive and clean. In addition, the customer has to be impressed on the very first encounter if the company wants to retain a good customer base. This calls for proper grooming of the hired personnel. They have to be properly dressed for the job and offer quality services. The offices and waiting rooms where the business is being conducted have to be thoroughly clean and presentable. Customers have to have a sense of trust when they make their purchase choices. It is important for the company to do some research and know what improvements to make on the quality of their packaging and what appeals to their customers. KFC is famous for its packaging. It is known for using the paper bucket for its large chicken orders and the use of a rotating bucket sign that’s used in most outlets in the US. It is also environmentally conscious and has introduced the re-useable food container. The plastic plates have long been replaced with the paper serving boxes all in an effort to reduce environmental pollution. The final P is people. A company has to know what type of people to hire and what they can do best. The right people have to be hired to do the right job. When trying to establish a successful business, knowing which people will perform which tasks best is something that a company must initially consider before hiring any personnel. The right people may be able to propel the business into achieving maximum sales. KFC has hired personnel that are able to deal with their customers efficiently and ensure that their customers are satisfied. In addition, the personnel hired are allocated positions that suit their skills and abilities. Key challenges facing KFC KFC sells up to 850 million chickens a year. It does this in collaboration with other companies that slaughter and rear the chickens for them. However, KFC in collaboration with these companies has been accused of killing the chickens inhumanely and subjecting them to torture. They have been accused of standing by as chickens are crammed into cages resulting in b roken bones before they’re slaughtered. Animal rights organizations have condemned these acts and this poses a problem for KFC if they intend to keep any customers. KFC has also faced problems with the health experts who claim that the oils used to make the chicken consist of Tran’s fats which result in complicated health issues such as obesity. Nutritionists and other health organizations have threatened to sue KFC if they do not change the kind of fat that they use to make their chicken products. Furthermore, the company has faced protests in India where angry farmers are against the company bringing in ‘junk food’ to a nation that greatly suffers from malnutrition. The farmers fear that the number of growing fast food chain restaurants could deplete the country of their livestock and lead to deterioration of agricultural activities. How KFC can remain relevant in the market Consumers’ desire to have a healthier diet at KFC and the humane treatmen t of chickens is one of the challenges that KFC is facing today. These issues are closely related to the sales of the company and should therefore be addressed immediately if the company wants to maintain its customer base. A new marketing plan has to be designed in order to improve the overall image of KFC and attract more customers. The marketing strategy has to address the issue of torturing chickens and thus create solid revenue for the company.
