Pay Differential in Sports Based on Performance Free Essays
The compensation hole between sexual orientations has been an overwhelming issue in the games field. Ladies are consistently paid not exactly their male partners, yet men experience pay differentials between one another in certain games. In male commanded sports, for example, hockey, baseball, and ball, there is a variety in an individualââ¬â¢s compensation that unfavorably influences the teamââ¬â¢s execution and the other way around. We will compose a custom paper test on Pay Differential in Sports Based on Performance or on the other hand any comparable subject just for you Request Now In an industrialist society, everyone is paid what their work is worth. Sports, for example, hockey, b-ball, and baseball are pay-for execution sports, in that the players are paid what their abilities are worth to the group. The less normal an ideal ability is, the more cash a competitor will make as a result of it. There has been a constant discussion about how competitors ought to be paid. Is a defensemen in hockey who can score as important as a forward or all the more so? Is a catcher in baseball who can hit different homers in a season as significant as a star pitcher? Numerous scientists utilize financial hypotheses to break down ââ¬Å"Pay-For-Playâ⬠or the possibility that competitors are paid better for a superior exhibition. So as to inspect athleteââ¬â¢s compensations certain definitions should be built up already. Overpaid competitors are not competitors are not players who are paid more than what they are worth, yet rather are the top workers in their game. Come up short on competitors are competitors who are paid not exactly the normal player. It should be recognized that the accomplishment of a group isn't only subject to pay, yet additionally mentor and administrative info that are frequently discarded from investigate papers. The accompanying looks at pay-for-execution in hockey, baseball, and ball. The connection between's a teamââ¬â¢s execution and the individual pay rates of the players are analyzed. Regardless of whether being a free specialist or having a marked agreement and the impacts these may have on an athleteââ¬â¢s exertion applied are likewise taken a gander at. Hockey, baseball, and ball are all compensation for-execution sports where the best performing players are paid top pay rates. Idson Kahane (2000) utilized the National Hockey League (NHL) to inspect collaborator efficiency and its impact on pay. Since the measurements of a teamââ¬â¢s execution and the pay of every player are openly recorded and promptly accessible, the data was viewed as exact and perfect to use in the examination. Idson Kahane (2000) posed the inquiry with regards to whether an individualââ¬â¢s unique characteristics were compensated/esteemed in an unexpected way (as a more significant pay) in an assortment of conditions or in extraordinary cases. The specialists got the measurable information from Hockey News [February 8, 1991 and November 15, 1991] and the Hockey News Complete Hockey Book that accumulated information from different years. The last informational index of Idson and Kahane (2000) contained information on 930 players from the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons. The focuses and in addition to/short connection were factually noteworthy at the 10% level demonstrating that an individual player performed at a more significant level when playing with a group that contained better players. One of the principle issues with considering competitors is that players can be exchanged midyear and basically play on numerous groups in a given season. To counter this, the analysts put a competitor in the group that detailed the athleteââ¬â¢s all out compensation for the year. There is nobody approach to look at a playerââ¬â¢s ability in hockey. Idson Kahane (2000) set players as either a ââ¬Å"forwardâ⬠or ââ¬Å"otherâ⬠, for example, defenseman or goalie. The severe division of this classification may have had an antagonistic effect on their outcomes in light of the fact that defenseman and goalies are not known for scoring focuses. Jones Walsh (1988) made two classifications for position in their information by marking advances and defensemen as advances that would be inspected by the focuses they scored. Goalies were the other class and were investigated utilizing objectives permitted all things considered. Since defensemen don't score the same number of focuses as advances, the analysts called attention to that a defenseman scoring an equivalent number of objectives as a forward would gain more cash on account of the additional expertise. In hockey, goalies make the enormous recoveries of the game, while advances score the large objectives of the game. Doing routine protective moves in a normal and ongoing way, defensemen are canvassed in a sheet of uncertainty. The top paid forward in hockey, Vincent Lacaviler, made $10 million, while the top paid safeguard man was, Zendo Chara, made just $7. 5 million for the 2009-10 season. Both had generally equivalent measurements for the season, however Lacaviler is a notable forward who makes the large plays individuals recall. Jones Walsh (1988) fuse the quantity of trophies and the number in the draft pick into their condition. The two trophies and draft pick numbers help safeguard men more than advances. Including these in was an endeavor to even the playing field among advances and defenseman. It was still demonstrated that advances with guarded aptitudes, ââ¬Å"enforcersâ⬠as they are called, get more cash-flow than defensemen with scoring capacities. It is a likelihood that authorities are paid more since they energize fans with both their scoring and battling aptitudes. George Steinbrenner once stated, ââ¬Å"You measure the estimation of a [player] by what number of fannies he places in the seats. â⬠People who go to athletic occasions go to see the host group win, not simply to eyewitness one force player. Sommers, P. M. , Quinton, N. (1982) utilized that way to deal with analyze how having a genius in the group, paying little heed to their contribution to dominating the match, would influence income. It was found that in spite of the fact that genius impact income, winning affects swarm participation. Since the players were sorted out into the classifications of ââ¬Å"free agentsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"not free agentsâ⬠, it was likewise indicated that free specialists get more cash-flow on normal than players without contracts. Harder (1992) estimated that pay-for execution agreements would diminish the impacts of being come up short on a person. It was additionally guessed that come up short on people would not coordinate so a lot and would will in general have increasingly egotistical practices. Utilizing the value hypothesis, Harder (1992) arranged information for four periods of players in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Major League Baseball (MLB). Measurable information was collected from Sporting News [May 8, 1988]. The quantity of focuses a player got in a season and the general number of focuses in a vocation were sure markers that ball is a compensation for-execution sport. The outcomes for baseball are the equivalent; the better a competitor was in the season and generally his vocation, the better that athleteââ¬â¢s compensation was. The main theory was demonstrated somewhat right in that Harder (1992) found in baseball, the players who were paid less had lower normal measurements, however this didn't influence the quantity of runs from the came up short on competitors. In b-ball, a came up short on competitor was increasingly similar to shot the ball, however would not score as regularly as overpaid competitors. Overpaid competitors would contribute more to the group overall, as opposed to simply scoring focuses, and were commonly more group situated than came up short on players. This was predictable with the subsequent theory set forth by Harder (1992). A few confinements put on Harderââ¬â¢s (1992) work was that when utilizing sports pay rates in value hypothesis, the compensations will in general be a lot higher. In spite of the fact that sports groups are a decent territory to investigate execution based compensation as a result of the effectively available information, it additionally confines how generalizable an examination can be. A later method to decipher pay-for-execution was with the organization hypothesis. Agreements in sports, for example, b-ball, are expected to make both the competitor and the group directors, content. Competitors who are at various repeating phases of their agreement act in different manners. Not long before marking or leaving an agreement, competitors are bound to invest more energy to show signs of improvement contract (multi-million dollar, multi-year, or both). Soon after or in an agreement, players will in general play less exhaustingly (Stiroh, 2007). Stirohââ¬â¢s (2007) guessed that the decrease in the exertion a player advances is legitimately connected to the length of an agreement and furthermore the age of the competitor. The outcomes indicated that there is factual proof at the 1% level that before an agreement was marked, a competitor put more exertion into a presentation. There was a negative relapse comparable to age with the end goal that as age expands, the exhibition of a competitor consistently decreases. The speculation that a playerââ¬â¢s exertion will decay after an agreement is marked relies upon the length of the agreement. The more extended an agreement is, the more outlandish that a player is going to continue playing with a similar exertion. Stiroh (2007) presumes that the status of an individual playerââ¬â¢s contract is a decent indicator of the athleteââ¬â¢s by and large execution. An assessment between the success/misfortune level of a group and the teamââ¬â¢s finance utilizing various games (baseball, hockey, football, and b-ball) was directed by Quirk and Fort (1999). Over a multi year time frame (1990-96), there was critical proof in both the NHL and the NBA to recommend that a distinction in finance for competitors in a group will influences the success/misfortune rate. There was not convincing proof for the MLB and NFL. One should be careful about the outcomes however; the proof might be misdirecting a result of unanticipated occasions like wounds and players holding out on marking contracts. These four games were analyzed again in a similar setting by Forrest Simmons (2000) utilizing the outcomes for the 1999-2000 season and reached a similar resolution. In the three principle sports that were center around (hockey, baseba

Capturing the Value of Supplementary Services Free Essays
A brief note on Supplementary service verses standard service: The service as a product is essentially described as a package or bundle of different services, tangibles and intangibles, which all together form the total product. The package is divided into two main categories: the first one is the main service, which is called the ââ¬Ëcore serviceââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ësubstantive serviceââ¬â¢. The other one is ââ¬Ëauxiliary servicesââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëextrasââ¬â¢, which are often referred to as ââ¬Ëperipheralsââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëperipheral servicesââ¬â¢. We will write a custom essay sample on Capturing the Value of Supplementary Services or any similar topic only for you Order Now These are also known as supplementary services. The core service is the basic value provided by the service product. It is the reason to purchase or consume services. This is the reason for which any company is in business too. Supplementary services are those that facilitate and enhance use of the core services. These are services other than core that companies offer to their customers to give additional value to their products or to encourage customer loyalty. Flexible Services Offering: It has been observed through research that most suppliers typically provide customers with more services than they want or need at prices that often reflect neither the value of those services to customers nor the cost of providing them.Too many times the manufactures continue to let sales people give away whatever services they think it will take to land a deal, even if those freebies dramatically reduce the profitability of business. To overcome the cost associated with the above issues, the author has suggested the ââ¬Ëflexible service offeringââ¬â¢ model to enable manufacturing and service companies reduce the number and cost of services they use to augment their core products. This approach enables the company to identify a naked solution or a naked system (which is the bare-bones-minimum number of services uniformly valued by all customers in a given segment at the lowest possible price that yield a profit). These naked solutions are then wrapped with options ââ¬â particular services valued by individual customers within the segment. The steps to achieve flexible service offering are, ? Understand the supplementary services portfolio. If the company compiles the complete inventory of supplementary service, then it can assess the value of each service and the cost of providing it. ? Assess the value of the service rather than just measuring the customer satisfaction. Results indicate that while customers determine their re-purchase intention based on both core and supplementary service quality, mediated by value and satisfaction there is a direct and positive relationship of involvement between customer satisfaction and value of supplementary service provided. Extend the activity-based-costing technique to supplementary services as well. If the manufacture can break down costs on segment-to-segment and customer-to-customer basis, then it is viable to determine the value/price of the service being offered. This helps industries to target those market segments where their products or services provided the greatest value to customers and thus held the greatest potential for profit. Identify the existing standard servi ces that can be done away with or specialized services that can be part of standardized services. Identify the existing optional services that can be discontinued. The benchmark here is simple: if the cost of the optional service exceeds the customersââ¬â¢ willingness to pay for it, the service should be discontinued. ? Apart from identifying the standard or optional services, to stay ahead in competition a manufacture has to continually innovate and produce new value added services. *For example in a survey taken by Hong Kong mobile phone industry to gauge the benefits of the supplementary services among the customers, it was reveled that the only one of the supplementary services (both optional and standard like pricing policy, staff assistance, customer service and transmission quality and network coverage) factor in the satisfaction determinants among the mobile phone users. The results suggest that network providers should focus more on transmission quality and network coverage as the core attributes of their service offerings and formulate appropriate ricing policy, rathe r than competing or focusing more on supplementary services like varied customer services. Benefits: When the supplementary services are offered with all the above attributes discussed in the flexible services offering section, there are lot many benefits the service providers gain and it also establishes the fact that trimming the supplementary services to what is required and beneficial to the manufacturer has benefits that far outweigh the benefits of keeping all the supplementary services just so as to satisfy the customer and keep the market share.Flexible service offering provides suppliers with a powerful means of retaining and expanding business with their most valuable customers. ? Helps customize the packages of products and services to meet more precisely the requirements of its spectrum of customers. ? Enables managers to be more adaptive and responsive in their pricing. ? Flexible service offering helps companies to revamp their sales force philosophies and practices. More control is given in the hands of the sales team there by enabling sales team to be more persuasive in explaining the value of services to the customers. #Case Study: Credit Card Marketing in Indian Industry The case study below deals with managing perceived risk for credit card purchase through supplementary services. Supplementary services can play a significant role in controlling functional and psychological perceived risk associated with credit card services. Marketers of credit cards can enhance the value of services to customers and can thus enhance purchase possibilities by reducing perceived risk through supplementary services that are controllable. Perceived risk is defined as the uncertainty that consumers face when they cannot foresee the consequences of their purchase decisions. The supplementary services recognized in this case were, ? ATM access, cash advance, and cash withdrawal and other facilities to meet financial requirements effectively. ? ATM access, cash advance, and cash withdrawal facilities with credit card. ? Through add-on card other family members can also use the credit card. ? Buying airline/railway tickets by using credit card at special counters save time. Additional facilities with credit card increase its usage value. In a study done by the author (Dr. Anita Goyal), it was revealed that 79. 26% agree with the idea that supplementary services provide operational value. It was also inferred that there were significant differences in the frequency of perceptions towards the statements indicating the functional utility of supplementary services available with credit cards. 70. 64% agree that supplementary services with credit cards help them to take care of psychological risk. There is a favorable perception of supplementary services in controlling the psychological risk. Respondents feel mental satisfaction to have supplementary services with credit cards. Thus, consumers while deciding for a credit card purchase consider facilitating services and supplementary services as significant in providing help to consumers for pre-purchase evaluation of credit cards and to make credit card purchase decisions in the Indian environment.References: 1. * Customer Satisfaction in the Hong Kong Mobile Phone Industry. ââ¬â Service Industries Journal; Jul99, Vol. 19 Issue 3, p162-174, 13p, 3 charts http://search. ebscohost. com/login. aspx? direct=truedb=bthAN=2514451site=ehost-live 2. ## Managing perceived risk for credit card purchase through supplementary services. ââ¬â Journal of Financial Services Marketing; Mar2008, Vol. 12 Issue 4, p331-345, 15p, 6 charts. http://search. ebscohost. com/login. aspx? direct=truedb=bthAN=31227169site=ehost-live How to cite Capturing the Value of Supplementary Services, Papers

What contributions did Ford and Taylor make to the organisation of work Essay Example
What contributions did Ford and Taylor make to the organisation of work? Essay Organisations, like organisms, evolve over time. Understanding the nature of organisations and how they have changed helps us to better understand the purpose of managerial work. Contributions to organisational work are based on past events which are unlikely to be recreated in their entirety, thus rendering the strategy less efficient than it was in the original situation. The implementation of classical management theory was the main focus of works by Taylor and Fayol, with business managers such as Ford being heavily influenced by these ideas. Though Taylors concepts have been fundamental for the organisational structure of some post-industrialist firms as well as current ones, I believe the way in which they have been implemented is flawed as it indicates that the strategies only work for a narrow range of firms. The inception of scientific management Taylors principles of scientific management (Taylor in Pugh, D, 1990) were based on the assumption that workers put in as little effort as possible into their work just to earn money. Hypothetically, if this assumption were true, the evaluative arguments of Taylors ideas being too harsh may not have existed; but shifting all the responsibility for the organisation from the worker to the manager, monitoring each workers progress and encouraging the efficiency of workers by relating pay to performance led to an employee backlash. The severity of his ideas even meant that some governments forbade the use of Taylorism in a firms management structure. Although the continuous assembly line was a vital part of mass production, improvements in technology enabled small car components to be made accurately and the interchangeability of parts and the simplicity of attaching them together (Womack et al, 1990, p.26) allowed for a more efficient car-making process to emerge. The single purpose machine tools churned out standardised parts that didnt need to be adapted for every car by skilled workers, giving rise to the interchangeable worker. The pace of the conveyor belt of the assembly line set the pace of work the factory, permitting managers to focus on other ways to improve the firm rather than focusing on productivity and efficiency. As labour costs were a significant proportion of Fords costs, reducing the need for a specifically trained workforce led to a massive fall in the value of luxury cars, bringing a large part of the population in the US and UK into effective demand. Taylors theories are also based on the assumption that there is one best method in which an action can be undertaken, and all that is necessary is research into situation to find such a method, hence the name, scientific management. Not only has this strategy worked for the automobile industry, current examples can be seen in large chain restaurants and coffee shops such as Starbucks, as well as in the service sector. Buchanan and Huczynski (2001) identified telephone service jobs as a classic example of a job that required one specific procedure, in the form of customised call scripts, which can be followed. Fast food restaurant and call centre jobs have a high level of monotony, leading to passive workers who have little or no room to climb up the career ladder and tailor their own jobs. Focusing primarily on cutting costs by finding the most efficient method of production led to the downfall of scientific management and the rise of the people-orientated approach. The demise of scientific management Not being able to find the best way of producing a product or providing a service renders Taylors strategies impracticable. Ford tried to repeat the success of the Model T in the UK after the boom in car sales in the US; however, he did not foresee the strength on the trade unions in the UK. The labour market in the UK was inflexible and unable to adapt to the dehumanising nature of Fords factories. Although forcing workers to follow work ethic in a mindless and unquestioning manner improved the speed, precision and efficiency of production, the Model T failed to attract a large market in the UK. After sacking union workers and not listening to UK managers, Ford introduced the Model A which was better adapted to suit potential customers. This was one of the first proofs that Taylors concepts were only effective on a narrow range of non-complex industries, in which the best method of production could definitely be found after research. Tolliday (1992) noted that Fords successes were primarily based on Fords conception of fitting everything together, thus facilitating the advancements in technology and gifted mechanics to produce the Model T for a large market. I think that his success was partly down to luck as there was a constant supply of new workers in Detroit to make up for the 70% of workers that quit in the first week of Fords moving new assembly line manufacturing system. Additionally, in Buchanan and Huczynskis (2001) analysis of Taylor, they mention how he understates the complexity of what management is and what exactly managers do, and his basic assumptions that pay is a driving factor for work has been proven wrong by the Hawthorne experiment. The results demonstrated that labour has become a crucial part of the firm as, even though the experiment failed men, women joined an institution to become part of a team and forming a social aspect with co-workers outside of working hours. The need for recognition and belonging was a motivating factor in getting more women into the workforce. I think that without fully understanding the market and what managers do, commenting on how different models contribute towards organisational behaviour and their relative successes is futile. Defining management as an exact science or profession is difficult (Mintzberg, 1975, p.53) as decisions are not always taken rationally but are based on judgement and intuition. Whether this decision is good or bad can only be told in retrospect. Conclusions Increasing consumer choice and individuality of products as well as the growing complexity of markets and goods makes it harder to implement Taylorist principles. The further you move from standardisation and mass production using specialised machinery, Taylors theories begin to seem too extreme and thus would fail no matter how you tried to execute them. Given the political, social and cultural changes since Taylor first created the notion of scientific management, his theories seem of limited relevance compared to their significance at the time.

Solar System Science Project Ideas
Solar System Science Project Ideas Do you have a science fair project in your future? If so, consider focusing on the solar system. Outer space is rich with mysteries and scientific questions to explore, from the phases of the moon to the existence of space dust (micrometeorites). Start with this list of solar system science fair projects. Build a Working Sundial The ancients used sundials to tell time using the position of the Sun in the sky.à You can build your own sundial with two simple materials: a flat surface (e.g. paper, cardboard) and a thin object that can stand up (e.g. a popsicle stick or straw). Once your sundial is functional, test it for accuracy a few times per day by comparing the sundials reading to your watch or clock. Make Your Own Telescope Build a telescope. Galileo did, and so can you. Learn about the basics of telescopesà here, then check outà NASAs page on building your own. The easiest one to build is a Galileoscope, made out of a cardboard tube and some lenses.à Build a Model of the Solar System You can make a scale-model solar system out of paper or in a diorama. First, find out the distances between solar system objects, then do some math to get the distances to scale within your own model. Some tabletop scale-model solar systems contain marbles for the planets, a tennis ball for the Sun, and other smaller pebbles for asteroids and comets. Make a Spacecraft Model Build a model of a NASA space probe. Many of the major probes and space-based observatories have patterns you can download and use to make scale model, including theà Hubble Space Telescope and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Track the Lunar Phases First, read about the phenomenon of lunar phases here. Then, for a few months, observe the Moon in the sky each night, recording how, where, and when it appears. Record the information in a chart and include a drawing of the moons shape each day.à If you have the materials, you can construct a 3D model of the sun using small balls and a light source to show how the Sun illuminates the Moon and Earth throughout the month.à Study Renewable Energy For many years, NASA and other space agencies have been using solar panels to power their satellites and the International Space Station. Here on Earth, people use solar power for everything from household electricity to powering their watches and other electronics. For a science fair project on solar power, study how the Sun generates light and heat and how we convert that light and heat into usable solar power. Collect Bits of Space Micrometeorites are tiny bits of asteroid that drift through our atmosphere and land on the surface of the Earth.à You can collect them by looking in places theyre likely to end up. For example, rain and snow can wash them off of roofs, and they can flow down the drainpipes and storm gutters. You might also try looking in the piles of dirt and sand at the bottom of a rain spout.à Collect that material, remove anything that obviously is not a micrometeorite (e.g. large rocks and leaves), and spread out the remaining material on a piece of paper. Place a magnet underneath the paper and tilt it. Most of the material will slide right off; anything that does not slide off is magnetic. Study the remaining magnetic material under a magnifying glass or microscope. Micrometeorites will appear rounded and may have pits. Edited and updated byà Carolyn Collins Petersen

5 interview questions you shouldnââ¬â¢t ask potential employees
5 interview questions you shouldnââ¬â¢t ask potential employees We talk a lot about what questions interviewees should be prepared to answer, but what if youââ¬â¢re on the other side of that equation? Are there any danger zone questions (or just plain ineffective) questions you shouldnââ¬â¢t ask? There definitely are, and they range from inappropriate to downright illegal. Letââ¬â¢s look at some of them. 1. How old are you?Age is always a no-no in an interview. Even if the interviewee mentions it themselves or you can deduce the age based on their resume, you canââ¬â¢t ask about it or use it as a factor in the hiring decision. Per the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), itââ¬â¢s illegal to use age as a discriminating factor in hiring. So by mentioning age, youââ¬â¢re opening the door to potential legal consequences for your company- whether youââ¬â¢re just making small talk or not.2. Are you married/do you have kids?Again, illegal, even if itââ¬â¢s just small talk. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) forbids using gender or family status as an element in hiring someone for a role. A question about family status could make the interviewee think youââ¬â¢re fishing to see if she is planning to take maternity leave, or a question about marriage could make the interviewee think youââ¬â¢re trying to determine sexual orientation. Itââ¬â¢s best to leave it alone and find other ways to make small talk. And you donââ¬â¢t want to risk making the interviewee feel uncomfortable about having to discuss personal issues. Itââ¬â¢s better all around to keep discussion limited to professional areas.3. If You Were a [blank], what kind of [blank] would you be?This one isnââ¬â¢t illegal, by any stretch. Itââ¬â¢s just not a very useful or effective interview question. Knowing which kind of tree the interviewer identifies with or which former member of One Direction theyââ¬â¢d like to be doesnââ¬â¢t tell you much of anything about how theyââ¬â¢d approach the job at hand. Whenever possible, you should avoid filler questions like these.4. Whatââ¬â¢s your salary history? What a candidate made before is largely immaterial to what theyââ¬â¢d make at your company, unless youââ¬â¢re trying to take the easy way out and determine how low you can go, salary-wise. Either way, itââ¬â¢s not a terribly appropriate or relevant thing to ask someone whoââ¬â¢s applying for a specific job. It could put the interviewee on the defensive and steer the conversation away from the job itself.5. Whatââ¬â¢s your biggest weakness? If you ask this, youââ¬â¢re not going to get a 100% truthful answer. Candidates are on to this game, so youââ¬â¢re going to get an answer with spin on it. No one is going to say ââ¬Å"Yeah, Iââ¬â¢m just not good at motivating myself to get work done in the morningâ⬠or ââ¬Å"I make a lot of careless mistakes.â⬠And does the spin answer like ââ¬Å"I am too much of a perfectionistâ⬠really help you make this hiring decision? When youââ¬â¢re the interviewer and have all the power, itââ¬â¢s important to make sure youââ¬â¢re making a good faith effort to ask the right questions to get someone hired. The last thing you want to do is open legal cans of worms for your company or ask questions that just donââ¬â¢t tell you much about the person youââ¬â¢re hiring to fill this job. Learning to become a great interviewer is just as much a skill as learning to become a great interviewee, and the more you work on what to avoid, the more effective youââ¬â¢ll be.

Barack Hussein Obama Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Barack Hussein Obama - Research Paper Example President Obama has plenty of detractors and many blame him for things that he really has no control over. But despite this, Barack Obama represents America in ways that few other Presidents have in the past. He is a unique president that has been elected because he has experiences and attributes that appeal to the rapidly changing demographics of the United States of America. An important distinction that President Obama has that makes him unique among Presidents of the United States is his ethnicity. President Obamaââ¬â¢s mother, Ann Dunham, was a student in Honolulu, Hawaii when she met Barack Obama Sr. They were both studying in the same program at the university. Ann was from a working class family that had lived throughout the Midwest before relocating to Hawaii. She was a smart, able student with a passion for learning about cultures from all around the world. Barack Obama Sr. was from the Luo tribe in Kenya. As a child, he herded goats in his native Kenya. He was attending college on a scholarship. Ann and Barack Obama Sr. married in 1961 and Barack Obama Jr. was born a few months later. The fact that Ann was a white woman from the Midwest and Barack Obama Sr. was a black man from Africa is significant. President Obama became self-conscious about his race when he was a young teenager (Barack Obama Biography, 2011). He wondered why being black was looked down on by some white people. This is significant because President Obama is leading America during an age when ethnic minorities are the new majorities in several major metropolitan regions. America is a more ethnically diverse place and it is important that there are people in leadership that have experienced discrimination first hand. Some minorities think the Barack Obama should do more for them than he has while he has been in office. There may be few legislative victories he can point to, but it is good to have an ethnically mixed President so the issue of race can be discussed in a more constru ctive way than in the past in America. Barack is an important President for our day and age because he is a minority and that helps all Americans know that minorities are capable of sound judgment and capable leadership. Barack Obamaââ¬â¢s parents divorced when he was two years old. He then moved to Indonesia and lived with his step-father, mother and step-sister for several years. This is a second reason that President Obama is uniquely qualified to be our President. He is the only President in the history of the United States to have lived in a Muslim country for any period of time. Americaââ¬â¢s relations with the Muslim world are at an all time low in many respects. We still have close allies such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Yemen. But many Muslim countries hate America and Americans. Having experienced Muslim culture first hand, President Obama is in a strong position to understand the Muslim world. He knows from first hand experience that not all people in the Mu slim world are bad. He understands that the vast majority of Muslims are peaceful people that want peace with America. President Obama gave a famous speech in Cairo soon after he was elected. In this speech he called for greater unity and understanding between the western, democratic nations and the Arab, Muslim nations (Holzman, 2009). It is interesting to note that many of those people that heard this speech would begin peaceful protests two years later,

Animals and Myriad Ways they can Kill or Heal Us Essay - 2
Animals and Myriad Ways they can Kill or Heal Us - Essay Example Though, the defence mechanism can differ, but it still causes serious injury to the victim (prey) or survivor (attacker). Some animals use their claws, sharp teeth or horns and other strong body parts (tail or legs) to shield and defend from the potential danger; others, intimate their opponent with stings, bites or even with a single lethal touch. The term poisonous or venomous animal is generally used to refer the category of animals, which use their poisonous toxins or venom for attack or defence. However, there is a significant difference in the meaning of poison and venom. The former is absorbed by a touch and the later is injected through a bite, sting or stab. Thus, venom containing animals purposely inject their injurious toxins and poisonous animals contain poison in their skin, which is absorbed upon a single touch. The effect of the venom differs, as it is mainly dependent upon the amount of venom injected and the physical health of the victim. Therefore, venomous animal are active slayer and poisonous animal are passive slayer. Majority of the venoms are highly complex proteins that instantly or slowly deficit nervous system of humans or animals and adversely affect the blood circulation of the victim. Marbled cone snail or conus marmoreus is categorized as the most lethal animal in the world due to its potency of venom, but specific neurotoxins or conotoxins of its unique venom are utilized by the pharmacists to produce drugs, which have the potential to cure terminal pains. These beautiful tropical and sub tropical species have approximately 700 carnivorous predator kinds and almost eighteen of them cause human envenomation. Biologically known as Conus marmoreus, are generally termed as marbled cone snail, they nourish and breed on the reef of the oceans and are known as marine snails. These species belong to family of Conidae and fall into the phylum Mollusca. Their

Female Genital Mutilation Essay -- essays research papers
For one minute I just want you to think you were born a female in an African country. Did you no you are 90% more likely to have had gone through some form of female genital mutilation. Every day, thousands of girls are targeted for mutilation. Like torture, female genital mutilation (FGM) involves the deliberate infliction of severe pain and suffering. Its effects can be life-threatening. Most survivors have to cope with the physical and mental scars for the rest of their lives. Female genital mutilation (FGM) is the partial or complete removal of the external female genitals for cultural rather than medical reasons. Other names for FGM include female circumcision or ritual female surgery. It is performed in some African, South American, Asian and Middle Eastern countries. Mutilation is a cultural rather than a religious practice, and its origins are unknown. Usually, it is performed from a few days after birth to puberty, but in some regions, the torture can be put off until just before marriage or the seventh month of pregnancy Globally, approximately 5 girls are mutilated every minute." If we do the math, we discover that equates to 300 per hour, or 7,200 per day, or 50,400 per week, or 2,620,800 per year. Considering that women make up 49% of the world, form 35% of its paid labor force, head 33% of its households, make up 95% of its nurses, perform 62% of its work hours, yet receive 10% of the world's income, own 1% of its property, make up 70% of its poor, 66% of the illiterate, 80% of the refugees, 75% of the sick, it seems to me that women--in these countryââ¬â¢s live in a male dominated world and are there for convenience not happiness. The different types of FGM are classified by the extent of the surgery involved, and include: â⬠¢ Type I -. The hood of skin that sits over the clitoris is removed. â⬠¢ Type II - The entire clitoris is removed. â⬠¢ Type III - The external genitals are partly or totally removed and the wound stitched together, leaving a small gap to allow the passage of menstrual fluid and urine â⬠¢ Type IV - other practices including piercing, cauterizing, scraping or using corrosive substances designed to scar and narrow the vagina. In most cases only a small opening the size of the tip of a matchstick is left for th... ...fertility â⬠¢ Painful sexual intercourse â⬠¢ Reduced sexual enjoyment â⬠¢ Childbirth difficulties, such as severe tearing and hemorrhage â⬠¢ Posttraumatic stress syndrome, including nightmares and flashbacks. If this pain in known to all of the communities taking part in this practice, why is it still legal to perform? This violence has been inflicted systematically on millions of women and girls for centuries. Governments in the countries concerned have done little or nothing effective to prevent the practice. "FGM is an issue that concerns women and men who believe in equality, dignity and fairness to all human beings, regardless of gender, race, religion or ethnic identity. It must not be seen as the problem of any one group or culture, whether African, Muslim or Christian. FGM is practiced by many cultures. It represents a human tragedy and must not be used to set one person against the next, one religious group against the other, or even women against men." But just think, is it really necessary? Has anyone even bothered to ask What do these women truly want?

Case Study Principles Of Management Education Essay
Introduction: Learning is a procedure. Learn mean know something freshly. It may get cognition, behavior and accomplishment. Human acquisition may happen as portion of instruction or personal development. Learning manners are a manner to assist better personal quality and accomplishments. This differs adult male to adult male. There are many learning manners ; ocular, logical, verbal etc. There are some theoretical accounts and manners in larning like as ââ¬ËTRAP ââ¬Ë theoretical account ââ¬ËVAK ââ¬Ë theoretical account and there are some known figures who presented their position for larning. As an illustration Kolb ââ¬Ës learning rhythm. Kolb ââ¬Ës learning rhythm: Kolb presented the following learning rhythm in 1984 which is called Kolb ââ¬Ës learning rhythm. Kolb ââ¬Ës experiential acquisition theory are today good known to faculty members, instructors, pupils, directors, and trainers and every bit good as others. Successively, Kolb ââ¬Ës acquisition manners theoretical accounts and Fundamental constructs towards our apprehension and explicating human larning behavior and towards assisting others to larn besides. He described larning system in two levels- a four phase rhythm and four-type definition of larning manners. Four phase rhythms is as below: Concrete experience ( making or holding an experience or CE ) Brooding observation ( reexamining or reflecting on the experience or RO ) Abstract conceptualization ( reasoning or larning from the experience or AC ) Active experimentation ( be aftering or seeking out what anyone has learned or AE ) And these four manners are the rhythm and that is every bit below:Figure: Kolb ââ¬Ës acquisition rhythmPage-3 ( hypertext transfer protocol: //www.ldu.leeds.ac.uk/ldu/sddu_multimedia/kolb/static_version.php ) Four-type definition of larning manners, ( each stand foring the combination of two preferable manners from Kolb ââ¬Ës manner, it is like a two-by-two combination, harmonizing mathematical matrix regulations of the four-stage rhythm manners, as presented below ) , for which Kolb used the footings: Converging ( AC/AE ) Accommodating ( CE/AE ) Assimilating ( AC/RO ) Diverging ( CE/RO ) ( hypertext transfer protocol: //www.businessballs.com/kolblearningstyles.htm ) Abstract conceptualization ( AC ) Concrete experience ( CE ) Active experimentation ( AE ) Converging ( AC/AE ) Accommodating ( CE/AE ) Brooding observation ( RO ) Assimilating ( AC/RO ) Diverging ( CE/RO ) We besides can stand for it as follows ;( Class talk and class stuffs )Active experimental ââ¬â abstract conceptualization Active experimental ââ¬â Concrete experience Brooding observation ââ¬â Concrete experience Brooding observation ââ¬â Concrete experience But this tabular array can be represent in many manner merely we have to administer Diverging ( CE/RO ) Assimilating ( AC/RO ) , Assimilating ( AC/RO ) and Accommodating ( CE/AE ) in different manner. And anyone can make that and explicate in his ain manner. Now we will hold a expression how these systems adaptable encephalon or people work or execute in practically. Converging ( making and believing ââ¬â AC/AE ) ââ¬â this is a practical and engineering based acquisition system. Peoples with meeting larning manner attempts to work out any job utilizing their acquisition and attempts to happen work out any practical issue. They like proficient jobs and their concern about people and inter personal facets is less. They are best at happening Page-4 Practical utilizations of theories and issues. They are most attracted to proficient undertakings and jobs apart from societal and interpersonal issues. They like to make experiment with new jobs and issues. Accommodating ( making and experiencing ââ¬â CE/AE ) ââ¬â The people who are with Accommodating larning manner, they are really active and relies on surmising instead than logical. They use analytical theories and practical attack to make any undertaking. They prefer new challenges and they are much planned. Peoples with an Suiting acquisition manner prefer to work in squads to finish undertakings. They set marks and actively work in the field seeking different ways to accomplish an aim. Assimilating ( watching and believing ââ¬â AC/RO ) ââ¬â The significance of absorbing is absorbing. Absorbing larning penchant is for a concise, logical attack. Their Ideas and constructs are more of import than people. They need a good clear account instead than practical chance. They excel at understanding wide-ranging information and organizing it a clear logical format. They ever prefer to garner thoughts knowledge. Peoples with this manner are more attracted to logically sound theories than attacks based on practical value. They are really of import for effectivity in information and scientific callings. Peoples with this manner prefer readings, talks, researching analytical theoretical accounts, and holding clip to believe things exhaustively. Diverging ( experiencing and watching ââ¬â CE/RO ) ââ¬â People with this manner are able to look at things from different positions. They are really sensitive. They prefer to watch instead than make, be givening to garner information and usage imaginativeness to work out any job. They are good at sing concrete state of affairss several different point of views. This is called ââ¬ËDiverging ââ¬Ë manner because these people perform better, in such state of affairss that require ideas-generation, for illustration, brainstorming. They are interested in people, tend to be inventive and emotional, and be given to be strong in the humanistic disciplines. Peoples with the Diverging manner prefer to work in groups, to listen with an unfastened head and to have personal feedback. Different acquisition manners are appropriate in different phase: Human existences are ever larning. In different age and phase people learn otherwise. When we were in school we learned in one manner but after that our acquisition system has changed. And there are some people who learn faster than the other in his same age and phase. So it differ age, phase, state of affairs. There are some people who learn merely by listening. This called auditory scholar. These people they attend any category ( pupil ) or seminar or meeting any where they learn best by listening. They are really sensitive to outside noise. There are some people who learn from optic. They are called ocular scholar. Basically they learn from assortment of coloring material and image or written information. They like to read instructions and conceive of about any topics or subject. They are besides be more sensitive to ocular distraction. Page-5 There is another larning manner named kinesthetic larning manner in VAK theoretical account. This is really physical learning manner. It is like when person traveling, walking, his/her sense is larning. These scholars learn from assorted motions. When they are on any motion they use to do notes. When they read something they scan it foremost and so they focus on it. So human being, they start larning when they are childs. And that clip they learn from listening and watching. But after a certain period they learn to utilize their encephalon. They learn how to speak how to walk. Then they go to school they start their academic acquisition. Person learn by analyzing, average memorising. Person learn from understanding. Briefly, any pupil, he attend the categories and dressed ore talks and he does non necessitate to analyze more to catch the subject. But on the other manus there is person who needs to analyze more than concentrating the talks. At last when they enter their occupation there is another state of affairs. Person can think what he has to make or non. Person needs to explicate everything point to indicate. But it depends how he learns. My learning manner: I can retrieve something a long clip as I have learned it practical. If I do non understand something I try all my best to larn it. But sometimes I can non. If I can hold a expression practically any theory, I can retrieve or use, Especially Scientific footings. But sometimes when I am analyzing something I do guess and seek to compare with any practical events. I think when I do it ; I can capture it really rapidly. For an illustration when I was analyzing in secondary degree, there were a scientific theory name ââ¬Ëprinciple of Archimedes ââ¬Ë my instructor tried his all best to do it clear to me but he failed. So he shown me this in research lab how it does work and what was the rule. Still today I can retrieve this theory and I can explicate this. Sometimes I when I am in a new phase, I try to set myself with that state of affairs and comparison with some old state of affairs to happen out the similarities. Sometimes it happens but sometimes my thoughts go incorrect. On the other manus I have seen some people who can think something, they can understand anything immediately. But I can non make the same thing. There is person who can conceive of sing any jobs, subject, or undertaking but I ca n't make the same thing. When I think something I find out some critical thoughts where as some easy thoughts could be the best solution. I ever think something which is that solution what is effectual but non instant solution means this could be use subsequently but it is a possible solution of that job. So I think I have to alter this. Another thing when I learn something from person I ca n't catch everything immediately, when I review that so I can understand that. But I think I am better, when I teach something others. And I am reflector sometimes. It is because when I tech something other chap that clip I try to retrieve my lectors and their manner. Finally, I think I have to develop my thinking power, happen out some possible easy solution. Decision: As acquisition is a uninterrupted and lifetime procedure. So it really of import to holding thoughts about assorted larning manners. And there some people who learn otherwise. And there are some celebrated people, they contribute and presented their thoughts and positions on larning procedure. And nowadays Kolb ââ¬Ës manner is popular. Our writers will create an original "Evaluating Bank Account Types Offered To International Students" essay for you Create order By using two questionnaires; one from the international students and other from the bank personnel, the present study assessed the important factors that were considered significant in selecting the bank and the importance of students as customers for the banks. The results suggested that there was little different in the basic facilities offered by the four banks, but Lloyds TSB was the most popular among the international students due to its variety of student accounts. In conclusion, the research offered an insight into the management and the marketing strategies that banks can make use of to attract international students as potential customers. CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION The aim of the present study was to evaluate the major banking institutes in Newcastle and distinguish the services and account types offered to international students. For the study, four banks were selected among which three were United Kingdom based and one was an international bank. These banks were: HSBC Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s TSB Barclays National Westminster (NatWest) The researcher compared the services, interest rate, few charges and the ease of accessibility of these banks to the international students with they region they resided and attended their respective colleges or universities. The topic of the present research was selected by the researcher because the issue of how international students select their banks in Newcastle has been given considerable attention by researchers. The reason for this is that most international students who come to Newcastle are without local bank accounts and in the long run most students need such a facility to work on completing transactions such fees payments, living expense, accommodation and fulfillment of other financial needs. Investigating such information would assist banks to recognize the suitable management and marketing strategies required to attract new students as customers and keep hold of existing ones (Kaynak Kucukemiroglu, 1992). The relevant literature indicates that a great deal of research effort has been put into investigating the bank selection decisive factor for international students in the United Kingdom. Researches on bank management and marketing are not a new phenomenon. In fact, a lot has been written on the subject of bank management and marketing with the bulk of the literature relating to banking behavior of general customers. A broad range of marketing paradigms related to customers has been examined, including market segmentation, attitudes, purpose, inclinations, bank loyalty, bank selection choices, bank representation, bank service value, contentment a nd multiple bank users (Garland 2002). One marketing concept related to customers that has fascinated abundance of researches has been the thought process of customers or the grounds on the basis of which customers decide to interact with particular banks (Anderson, Cox Fulcher, 1976; Evans, 1979; Kaynak, 1986; Boyd, Leonard White, 1994). A thorough examination of the present literature ascertains the generalization related to the thought process of retail customers. The population of interest in the vast bulk of such customer researches has been the general customer. Only a few of researches have intended for younger age groups such as the undergraduate section of the market though over past few years, the bank management have started to take vast interest in this section of the population (Mokhlis, Nik Mat Salleh 2008). Even though greater parts of undergraduate students are unemployed and their earning comes largely from educational loans, they offer an exceptional business opportunity for banks. First, in regards to their buying power, the student segment is growing and has turned lucrative (Ayadi 1996). With the development of educational services in United Kingdom, the amount of international students in further and higher education has been increasing rapidly over the years. Secondly, students are expected to require a bank account to settle their tuition fee or parental funding and might be taking care of their personal financial matters for the first time (Kaynak Whiteley 1999). Those students who do not yet hold bank accounts would be required to open one as they begin college because all transactions are done through the studentsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ bank accounts. Regardless of their comparatively basic banking requirements, students are considered an important segment in the market at the level in the buying cycle where they might be more receptive to marketing strategies from financial institutions (Thwaites Vere, 1995). Another import ant feature of the student market is the possibility for above-average profitability. Lewis (1982) suggested that banks understood that à ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"it is important to attract students to open accounts when they begin college, in the expectation that they would stay with the after graduation, and be lucrative, in the long run, for the bank.à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ The fundamental reason for this observation is that college student is the section of the population who has the likelihood of earning a larger income than any other section of the population. As stated by Duncan, Smeeding Rodgers (1992), only individuals who are studying have a considerably greater probability of rising from the low income strata into the middle class. Specially, as contrasted with non-graduates of similar age group, graduates usually secure more highly paid jobs, achieve a more developing career and thus, grow a need for a greater variety of personal financial services as they go by their own life cycle. Th e skill to build up an existence in the student market through suitable attainment and maintenance strategies is thus expected to have an effect on banksà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ future market share and revenue (Thwaites Vere, 1995). International students signify as a significant market for financial institutions such as banks. The skill to value, comprehend and deal with the precise needs of this segment section of the population is now a vital market reality (Cicic, Brkic, Agic, n.d). Bankers can no longer maintain their conventional belief that only business and salary earning customers will bring revenue to the bank. They must understand that student customers are also possibly lucrative market section and prospect market earnings will be attained by banks only if they target this up-and-coming section and win them (Grady Spencer 1990). Banks that would get hold of student segment must know the significant factors that decide the basis upon which students choose between financia l institutions (Kaynak Yavas 1985). Bank marketers must be capable of discerning what is central to student customers in the market and how their force compares with those of their competitors (Cicic, Brkic, Agic, n.d). United Kingdom has an extensive history of inviting international students to educate themselves in its colleges and universities. According to UCAS (2009), à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âIn the UK in 2009 there were 1.8 million full-time undergraduate students in higher education, which included over 104,000 international students.à ¢Ã¢â ¬? The rapid growth in the amount of international students in the past few years has become a significant supply of export revenues, and it surely has the ability for further rapid growth. It had been recommended that provided with the right support, the amount of international students studying in UK universities could more than double in the next few years (Higher educationà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s importance goes well beyond teaching 2009). There are numerous factors involved in offering of student accounts in nearly all financial institutions. It might be due to growing the customer base or acquiring the new customers in the budding stage. In the contest to get hold of more and more customers and attract the younger generation, the financial institutions are offering various types of products and services. International students studying in the United Kingdom need to look after numerous things once they have arrived at their respective colleges and universities. These include accommodation, health, money matters, registration, etc. But the first and the foremost duty of a student on arriving in United Kingdom is to open his or her account in order to carry out the required financial transactions. Even though, the student cannot open a bank account until he or she has arrived and enrolled at the college or the university, but Barclays now offers a bank account that can be opened before arriving in United Kingdom (International Student Handbook 2009). In order to open a bank account, an international student needs to first decide on the bank and the account that he or she requires. Some banks offer first-time students a Student Account with special advantages. However, each bank offers different facilities, and the student would need to compare and decide which one will be best for him or her (International student: banking Information 2009). Once the bank has been chosen, the student needs to take his or her passport along with his or her student visa to the chosen bank. If the student belongs to EU, then he or she is also required to take the national photo identity card as well (Opening a UK bank account 2003). Furthermore, the banks also require a letter or certificate from the university confirming the studentà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s United Kingdom study details. Moreover, in order to open an online or a telephone account, the bank may require more proof of the studentà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s identity (You can bank on it: opening a bank account in the UK 2004). The reason for banks requiring proof of ID is because the law of UK states that all financial services companies must do everything they can to ensure their services are not being used for financial crime. Because of this, banks must avoid accounts from being opened under fake identities. They must ask each and every individual who wants to open or operate a bank account for documents to prove their identity (International student opening a UK bank account, n.d) As Newcastle has gained the one of the top most position in the United Kingdom for further education, therefore the need for the student to open bank accounts to carry out their financial transactions has risen as well. This is because most international students who come to Newcastle are without local bank accounts and in the long run most students need such a facility to work on completing transactions such fees payments, living expense, accommodation and fulfillment of other financial needs. Thus, the banks have recognized the significance of international students as potential customer and it is due to this fact, the banks in Newcastle are aiming to improve their clientele by attracting students to open bank accounts in their respective bank through different marketing strategies and incentives. As a result, numerous bank representatives are seen roaming around in the first week of the academic year in various universities and colleges marketing their benefits to the potential customers. These bank representatives provide students with information regarding various services and benefits that are offered at their respective banks. They would also provide information regarding the different accounts that can be opened at the banks. The most common type of accounts are: Deposit account or à ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"basic accountà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ Current account Student account The banks also offer a number of facilities to their customer to make their financial transaction more convenient and easier. These facilities include: Cash withdrawals available at Post Office Debit Card ATM ATM Card Direct Debit Online Banking Telephone Banking 1.1 Research Aims The basic aim of the research was to: Find the cheapest bank account students can open. Compare HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s Plc, Barclays and NatWest in Newcastle for their international student services. Availability of banks/ATMà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s within the student area of Newcastle. 1.2 Research Objectives The objectives of the present research were to: Evaluate the best account type to open for international students. Investigate the majority of bank accounts used by international students. Investigate the reason for international students choosing a certain bank to open their bank accounts. Study the geographic locations and ease of access to the banks within the region designated to students and their life styles. Study the 4Pà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s (Product, Price, Promotion, Place) of the banks. Investigate the importance of students as potential customers for the banks. Find out the marketing and management strategies employed by the four banks. CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW The banks in todayà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s world are trying to attract students to open their accounts at their banks. The reason for this is that the banks think about it in the long term point of view. To them a student is not a student: a student is an individual who would have a career some day and this particular individual would be a loyal customer, would pay back his or her overdraft (sometimes with charges), need a loan or a mortgage and so on. Therefore, the perception of the student account summed up by the banks, is to facilitate the banking needs of the students who are working towards undergraduates. The basic banking needs that would help students fulfill their financial needs vary from bank to bank as different banks offer different products and services, such as cards, deposit slips and cheques, to its student customer. A small number of researches regarding the subject of bank selection decisive factor of international students in the UK have taken place over the yea rs. Gray (1977) examined student behavior regarding bank services in the UK. He suggested that convenience was the most vital factor affecting the studentsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ choice of bank. Another research by Lewis (1982) analyzed the banking behavior in students studying in the UK. A total sample of 716 students in 11 universities and colleges in the Greater Manchester area were inspected for the research. From findings of the study, it was discovered that 92 per cent of students thought they would remain with their current bank until their course finished while 44 per cent considered carrying on with the same bank. Moreover, it was discovered that convenience of site of the bank and its facilities to college was the main factors influencing on studentsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ choice of bank. A study by Thwaites and Vere (1995), also taken place in UK, illustrated that nearness of an ATM to the educational institution, free banking service and student offers were the main three re asons used by students in choosing the banks to deal with. The present study was focused on researching the main facilities provided by HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest in their student account. Furthermore, the researcher also studied the extra facilities provided by each of the bank in the à ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"student accountà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢. The study helped the researcher get a general overview of the banking facilities provided to international student that were offered by HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest. Thus, the researcher was able to move forward and decide upon the most feasible and the optimum choice of international students regarding the bank and the bank account. The review of the literature was mainly focused upon the products and services offered by the four banks HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest to international students. Furthermore, the extra facilities that differentiated one bank from th e other were also thoroughly studied in the literature review. National Westminster Bank Plc or generally known as NatWest is a part Europeà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s second largest bank, the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. In order to make the studentsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ financial transactions convenient and easier, NatWest has fifty five branches in the countryà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s largest universities. Moreover, NatWest also has 1650 branches that are more than any of the commercial banks in the country. To benefit the students who come to study in the United Kingdom from overseas, NatWest has offered a Blue International Account that charges a fee of 6.95 pounds monthly. The literature review on the different services offered by HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s TSB, Barclays and NatWest indicated that all of the banks provide students with the basic services that are required to fulfill the financial transactions, however, the Student Account product is structured in various ways, in accordance with the style, strategy and control affairs of each bank. CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY 3.1 Sample The present study was an investigation into student banking arrangements at four major banks- HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest- in the Newcastle area, and recommendations as to which provided the best services to international students. A sample of 100 subjects, including both males and females, ranging from the ages of 18 to 28 years, was drawn from different areas in Newcastle, United Kingdom. All the subjects were international students belonging to Newcastle university dormitories, Northumbria dormitories and Newcastle college campus in Newcastle. Another sample of 40 subjects, both males and females, was drawn from bank personnel of HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest. 10 employees from each bank were drawn as a sample. Further information from both international students and bank personnel was gathered regarding age, gender, education, accommodation, etc. 3.2 Sampling Strategy The sampling strategy employed in the research was Stratified Random Sampling. Stratified Random Sampling also referred as proportionalÃâà orÃâà quotaÃâà random sampling, is separating the population into uniform subgroups and then drawing a simple random sample from each subgroup (Trochim, 2006). The reason for employing Stratified Random Sampling was that it enabled the researcher to draw a sample of international students from the total population and then draw a random sample among the international students to administer the questionnaire. Same was the case with the questionnaire from the banking personnel. For the present study, both primary and secondary researches were carried out. The use of both primary and secondary researches enabled the researcher to not only gather facts and figures about the products and services the different banks offered but it allowed analysis of the arrangements that the banks offered to international students through these products and services. 3.3 Primary Research 3.3.1 Questionnaire for Students A questionnaire was distributed among international students of Newcastle to find out which of the bank accounts was used most by the students. The questionnaire also had questions concerned with why the students chose a certain bank among HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest and what features of that bank attracted them the most. There were questions designed to investigate the geographic locations and ease of access to these banks within the region designated to students and their life styles. The questionnaire was divided into three sections. The first section dealt with gathering the information regarding the student respondent. This section included questions on age, gender, and educational level, how the student was funding his/her education, his/her tuition fee, maintenance cost, etc. The second section of the questionnaire was designed to gain an insight in the respondentà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s history of banking. This section included questions on the number of accounts the student held previously and the type of account he/she held. The next section that is the last section was regarding the respondentà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s experience of banking in Newcastle with the four banks; HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest. The questions in this section also dealt with the importance of different offered services to the respondent, factors that were involved in the studentà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s choosing a certain bank. Furthermore, questions on comparison of the four banks in Newcastle that is, HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest on the difference of the services and the type of accounts the respondent held at these banks were also included. 3.3.2 Questionnaire for Bank Personnel Another questionnaire was designed to gather data from the bank personnel of HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest. These questions were related to how important potential student customers were to their organization. Furthermore, the questions also investigated the management and marketing strategies these banks used. This questionnaire was also divided into three sections. The first section of the questionnaire was designed to provide a profile of the bank employee who responded to the survey. Questions on age, gender, the bank they were currently working for and their designation at the bank were included. The next section was regarding the importance of students as customers to these banks. In this section, the banking personnel were asked questions regarding whether it was important to have students as their customers, the type of accounts held by the students, why the students chose their bank over their competitors and the significance of different t ypes of services offered at their banks. The third section was related to the marketing strategies, that is, the 4Ps that the banks used to attract students. This section included questions on the product, price, promotion and place of the products and services offered to the international students. 3.3.3 Consent Letter All the participants in the study were given a consent letter, which gave them the right to withdraw any information at any stage of the research. Also the authority and confidentiality of the people was confirmed 3.3.4 Cover Letter A cover letter was attached to both the questionnaires which explained the aims and objectives of the research to the respondents. It gave information about the time that the questionnaire would take to complete. Furthermore, it explained the privacy and the confidentiality of the information gathered. . 3.4 Secondary Research Secondary research was also employed in the present study. The purpose for this was to gather data regarding each bank from internet, books, articles and international account handbooks. The use of secondary research enabled the researcher to gather information regarding the various products and services offered to international students by these banks. Furthermore, it also enhanced the level of objectivity involved in the research as the data was gathered from other sources. 3.5 Research Design A comparative research design was employed in the study. A comparative research design evaluates two or more groups on one variable (McMillan 1991). This was employed because the research is an investigation in to student banking arrangements at four major banks in the Newcastle area, and recommendations as to which provide the best services to international students; (HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest). Thus, it was a comparison of the four banks as to which offered the best and the cheapest services to international students. 3.6 Procedure In order investigate into student banking arrangements at four major banks- HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest- in the Newcastle area, and recommendations as to which provided the best services to international students, a sample of 100 subjects, ranging from the ages of 18 to 28 years, was drawn from Newcastle, United Kingdom. All the subjects were international students belonging to Newcastle university dormitories, Northumbria dormitories and Newcastle college campus in Newcastle. Another sample of 40 subjects was drawn from bank personnel of HSBC, Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s plc, Barclays and NatWest. A comparative research design was employed in the research which is aimed the comparison of two or more groups on one variable (McMillan 1991). Stratified random sampling was used. First of all written permission was taken from the heads of educational institutions and the banks. They were briefed about the research, its significance, time involved and the proce dure. Furthermore, the sample population was informed and consent forms were distributed. Also the authority and confidentiality of the people was confirmed. Individual testing was carried out. One time approach to the participants was used for data collection. The subjects were administered the questionnaires. The testing environment provided to the sample population was sufficiently quite to facilitate adequate concentration. The instructions were read aloud so that the sample population could easily comprehend the questionnaire. On average the administration took 15 minutes in individual testing situation. The study was under taken from February 2010 to March 2010. 3.7 Qualitative Analysis The qualitative analysis of the data included why students had opted for a certain bank, as well as some information of the facilities provided by each bank. Furthermore, it also included the types of the services students opted for at banks and what products and services of the banks attracted them the most. The qualitative analysis of the data gathered from the bank personnel included the analysis of importance of students as customers to the bank. Moreover a qualitative analysis of the different management and marketing strategies used by the four banks was also carried out. 3.8 Quantitative Analysis Inferential and descriptive statistics was applied on the data collected. Frequency and percentages of the variables were calculated. The quantitative analysis of all the questions in the questionnaires was carried out. The presentation of appropriate primary sources (statistical indexes, graphs, tables of primary data) was also used in order to support the ideas of the literature. This enabled the researcher to statically analyze the data, interpret it and made recommendations accordingly. 3.9 Percentages In order to analyze and interpret the result, percentages were calculated for each question. This allowed the researcher to acquire a quantitative analysis of the data collected. CHAPTER 5 DISCUSSION In an increasingly competitive United Kingdom banking sector, banks cannot be far from understanding from the requirements, drives and purchase decisions of consumers. Similarly, banks are not unaware of the limitations that might be faced by the consumers desiring to purchase their products and services. One of the interesting findings of the study is that students extremely value their time and anticipate their banking transactions to be fulfilled as swiftly as possible. Therefore, the most significant method for financial transactions was considered as the ATMs and the debit/credit card. Moreover, the predominant factor in the studentsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ choice of the bank was convenience, that is, the proximity of an ATM from the college. Moreover, student offers and other facilities were also considered to be an important criterion for the bank selection among students. Furthermore, the results of the study clearly indicated that most of the students required bank accounts f or payment of fee or accommodation, thus, in Newcastle they mostly held student/current accounts which not only provided them with the basic facilities required for financial transactions but also offered them a number incentives like the Railway Card offered by NatWest. Even though all the four banks offered the basic facilities, but it was Lloyds TSB that most of the international students held accounts with. This was due to the fact that they offered a range of different student accounts to cater to the needs and wants of students belonging to diverse backgrounds. This fact laid a stamp on the rewarding of Lloyds Student Account the top 5 Star Rating by Defaqto for the excellent advantages it offered to the students (Student metrics: student banking and insurance in the UK 2007). The incentive of the Railway Card put NatWest in the second position with HSBC and Barclays following respectively. The management of the United Kingdom banks has acknowledged the significance of s tudents as customers by offering a range of student accounts. They have expanded their customersà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ base by including international students as possible customers. By employing a global perspective and turning their banks into a global brand, banks are devising new and innovative management and marketing strategies to attract students to open accounts in their respective banks (Bank marketing international 2006). Banks have recognized that a potential student customer is a customer for life and as customers are the lifeblood of banks, therefore the customersà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ views and demand should never be ignored. As the basic features in consumer groups vary to some extent, it is imperative for banks to aim market sections that are similar in regards to related financial service buying behavior (Harris 2000). The international studentsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ market in Newcastle is a rapidly growing segment as a result of the growing awareness of higher education in dev eloping countries. With the intention of being competitive in luring possible student customers, banks are keen to spend on a variety promotional programmes and incentives, with the plan of developing awareness for services being offered. Furthermore due to the fast-paced technological environment in todayà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s world, banks are emphasizing more on providing facilities to the students that offer convenience and quick financial transactions. Therefore, the rapid growth of ATMs near educational institutions and debit/credit card facility for students amongst banks is a common phenomenon. Also, both internet and telephone banking are other tools employed by banks to make banking transactions more convenient and easier. While pricing their products and services, banks keep in their mind the financial position of the students and thus offer a number of incentives along with the basic facilities. The bank management must therefore carefully think over the transforming world s cenario when creating financial strategies. The needs and wants of international students must also be considered in the development of banks service marketing plans (Kotler 2002). CONCLUSION The aim of the present study was to evaluate the major banking institutes in Newcastle and distinguish the services and account types offered to international students. For the study, four banks were selected among which three were United Kingdom based and one was an international bank. These banks were: HSBC Lloydà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s TSB Barclays National Westminster (NatWest) The researcher compared the different services offered and the ease of accessibility of these banks to the international students with they region they resided and attended their respective colleges or universities. The most significant fact revealed by the present study was that the students were mostly interested in receiving quick and convenient banking transactions. There was no significant difference in the basic facilities provided by the four banks. But a little difference was found in the incentives offered by the four banks and these differences depended on the policies of the particul ar banks and the needs and wants of the student customers. The results of the study clearly provide the basis for suggesting that Lloyds TSB was the most popular among the students due to its different range of studentsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ accounts. The patterns that emerged from the study provided an insight into strategies that banks use and can make use of to attract potential student customers.
